Product Information
2.64ct oval kunzite and .64ctw round pink sapphire rhodium over sterling
silver ring. Measures approximately .50"L x .06"W. Not sizeable.
A relatively “young” gemstone, kunzite was reportedly first discovered at the Pala Chief Mine near San Diego, California. However, the date of the find and by whom remain subjects of debate more than a century later. This best-known member of the spodumene mineral family was named in honor of famed gemologist George F. Kunz in 1903. This alluring gem’s appeal lies in its color palette, which ranges from pastel pinks to dramatic violet purples. Kunzite’s softer hues, complements of trace amounts of manganese, are often described as tender, feminine and flirtatious. Yet another reason to love kunzite is its remarkable clarity, meaning gems are typically eye clean and free of inclusions. However, kunzite does present challenges to lapidaries due to its perfect cleavage in two directions as well as its pleochroism (displaying different colors when viewed from different angles). To show kunzite’s finest hues, the lapidary must orient and carefully facet the raw crystal during the cutting process. And once the kunzite crystal has been expertly fashioned into a gemstone, the result is one of captivating beauty that’s well-deserving of its place in your collection!
