Product Information
Spanish yellow Orange sphalerite 61.21ct 26.36x19.78x13.80mm oval. The
gemstone was mined in Spain and cut in Thailand. The gemstone comes
with a Stone Group Labs gemstone identification report.
This 61.21 carat oval Spanish sphalerite is a top caliber beauty! Spain is considered by most experts as the best source for this highly dispersive collector gemstone. Sadly that mine is now closed, effectively stopping that supply. That's why we were thrilled to find some custom cut, old mine Spanish sphalerite gems in large sizes. All of these large size gem sphalerites, including this superb specimen, were acquired from a famous lapidary who sold us his collection. When these are gone, we don't expect to see gems of this size and quality ever again.
This magnificent sphalerite was fashioned by master lapidary Egor Gavrilenko, who specializes in cutting gem quality Spanish sphalerite, a rare gem prized for its exceptional optical characteristics. Mr. Gavrilenko has been fascinated with geology and mineralogy since he was a child growing up in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Surrounded by mineral crystals brought home by his geologist father, Egor turned his childhood passion into a successful career as he began working in the gem testing laboratory of the Spanish Gemological Institute (IGE) and later as a mineralogist and lecturer at the Spanish Open University (UNED). Today, he is the IGE delegate to the Federation for European Education of Gemology (FEEG), holding the position of Vice Chairman since 2012. In 2007, Egor returned to his passion of lapidary work, concentrating primarily on precision faceting, developing new faceting designs and optimizing existing designs with the aid of computer technology. Egor's desire is for every gem lover to be aware of the incredible optical properties of Spanish sphalerite, made even more dazzling by his expert faceting!
